# Trigger

> Take profit and set stop loss at market caps you choose.

Core

Trigger is your take-profit and stop-loss. Set up to 20 triggers, each with a market cap, above or below, and a percentage of your strategy balance. Nothing executes until a trigger is reached.

![Triggers in the Sonar app](https://docs.sonar.trade/images/docs/parts/trigger-input.png?v=20261104i)

A take profit above $5M and a stop loss below $2M.

## When To Use It

> [card] Good For
>
> * Taking profit on the way up
> * Cutting losses on the way down
> * Acting at market caps you set without watching the chart

> [card] Watch Out For
>
> * Each trigger fires once
> * A fast wick can hit a trigger and come straight back

## How It Works

* **Triggers**: up to 20, each fires when the market cap goes above or below the value you set. Each executes once.
* **Size**: each trigger is a percentage of your strategy balance. Together they must total at least 100%.
* **Capped**: if a trigger asks for more than what is left, it sells what is left.

> [!NOTE]
>
> **Example**\
> Sell 25% above $5M and 25% above $8M to take profit, and 50% below \$2M as a stop loss. Together they make 100% of your strategy balance.

Set your own triggers and see how much each one sells.

## Set It Up

**1. Open Create Strategy**

Pick the chain, choose Buy or Sell, then Core and Trigger. Add a name if you like, and press Continue.

**2. Pick The Token And Size**

Select the token and how much to trade, the source if more than one holds it, and the counter asset: the chain’s native token or a stablecoin.

**3. Set Your Triggers**

For each trigger, pick Above or Below, the market cap and a percentage of your strategy balance. Add up to 20. The percentages must total at least 100%.

**4. Add Optional Parameters**

Extra parameters, such as limits or a scheduled start. Skip them to run on defaults.

**5. Set Strategy**

It starts right away, or at your scheduled start.

## FAQ

> [accordion] What if the market cap is already past a level?
>
> That trigger is reached right away, so check the current market cap before you set it.

> [accordion] Can a trigger fire twice?
>
> No. Each trigger executes once.

> [accordion] Why does my strategy show Waiting?
>
> A limit isn’t met. That isn’t an error: the strategy keeps watching and resumes on its own when the condition is met again.
